The Polish Ministry of Science has inaugurated the nation’s first Basedock research laboratory in Krakow, marking a major step in expanding academic research infrastructure. The facility, located on the outskirts of the historic city, will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary studies and is expected to accommodate up to 150 researchers by the end of next year.

Facility Design and Capabilities
The laboratory features advanced computing clusters, specialized wet labs, and collaborative workspaces designed to support long-term academic projects. Officials stated that the site was chosen for its proximity to Jagiellonian University and the AGH University of Science and Technology, allowing seamless integration with existing academic programs. Initial funding of 48 million zloty has been allocated for equipment procurement and staff recruitment over the next three years.
Researchers will have access to high-performance simulation tools and secure data storage systems compliant with European research standards. The building incorporates sustainable technologies, including solar panels and advanced climate control, to minimize environmental impact while maintaining precise experimental conditions.
Research Priorities and Partnerships
Core research areas include computational biology, materials science, and data-driven social studies. The laboratory will operate under open-access principles, enabling Polish and international scholars to submit project proposals through a centralized review process. Early collaborations have already been established with institutions in Germany and Sweden to share datasets and co-author publications.
Ministry representatives emphasized that the Krakow lab is the first of several planned facilities intended to strengthen Poland’s position in European research networks. Recruitment for senior research positions is underway, with an emphasis on attracting scientists with experience in large-scale academic consortia. The site is scheduled to begin accepting project applications in the coming quarter.
